COMMUNITY

Cutelo Alto is a community north of Mosteiros, accessible by road and mountain path from Monte Velha.

The community is made up of approximately 300 inhabitants, who live mainly from agriculture and especially coffee growing, with few people working in the tertiary sector, as the unemployment rate is very high.

As in other communities, unemployment and lack of expectations lead to the emigration of young people to other islands and to the USA, creating a small subsistence economy for those who remain at home.

In this community, the project financed the construction of a community kiosk called Cantinho do Café from scratch to promote local cultivation and generate community returns.

Cantinho do Café is located in a very favorable location for the arrival of tourists, both those coming from the existing itinerary and those staying in the more famous Pai António, a neighboring community.

The community tells its story

Elisangela Andrade Gomes

O Cantinho do Pan . My name is Elisangela, I'm 30 years old and I run my own bakery. I work with my husband, a tireless colleague. I obtained a personal microcredit, thanks to which two months ago, we started the business. I also have a small pig farm, I slaughter and process them. I learned this profession thanks to a training course. I started at my house and little by little we got there and spread it. Thanks to the profits from creation, we opened a small home bakery, my husband kneads by hand and bakes, when I go out to sell the first batch he handles the second. Bread must be for everyone, I don't care about the profit in this activity, for me the important thing is to cover expenses. Bread must be affordable for everyone.

Elisangela Andrade Gomes

My husband and I take turns, he takes care of the animals, while I go to town to buy food for them. When I get back, I replace him so he can go home and knead bread. Then I get to it, go out to sell it and it continues baking. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't work, our work is our home and we also have a two-year-old son to raise. My dream is to expand bread production and dedicate myself to desserts and cakes. I would like to learn how to process fruits and vegetables. Cutelo Alto is my home and one I would never leave. The landscape, the fruit trees, the climate, the air I breathe. Our neighbors, the community...
